The Spirit Orca Community Inclusion Project Society is pleased to announce the launch of our new pool swim club for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Starting January 3, 2024 registered participants will have the opportunity to swim coached workouts three times a week for 1 hour. Sessions will be held at Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:00PM to 6:00PM and be coached by Susan Simmons, Peter Kremer and Jasmine Kremer.
The goals of the club are to:
- Provide people with intellectual disabilities with a swim program where they feel safe and valued;
- Provide others with an opportunity to swim along-side people with intellectual disabilities;
- Create an environment where swimmers can set their own swim goals and then to help them work towards them;
- Provide opportunities to compete in swimming events;
- Build team spirit though social activities; and;
- Manage the club for long-term stability.

Spirit Orcas Community Inclusion Projects provide quality of life programs that further inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in mainstream society. One of the ways we do this is by providing accessible programs for people with intellectual disabilities and inviting others into the program. This puts people with intellectual disabilities at the centre of our programs and promotes inclusion into their programs and spaces, not the other way around. This Swim Club is an example of such a program as it invites people with physical disabilities into the program.
